Photobioregulation (PBM) describes the use of red or near-infrared light to stimulate, heal, regenerate, and protect injured,
degrading or at risk of death tissues.
The brain is one of the most important organ systems in life, and its function is usually one that humans worry about.
The brain suffers from many different diseases, which can be divided into three broad categories: traumatic events (stroke,
traumatic brain injury and global ischemia), degenerative diseases (dementia, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease) and
psychotic disorders (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorders).
There is evidence that all these seemingly different conditions can be usefully affected by shining light into the head.
It may even be possible to use PBM for cognitive enhancement in normally healthy people.
